2009 Emmy Awards – Doogie Does Digital

So y’all know I love me some award shows.  For the past few years, I’ve normally ended up watching the red carpet for the Emmy Awards with another fellow pop culture and television watcher like Walkin’ Girl.  Since I was in Golf Cart Heaven with the fam, it was interesting to try to get my red carpet watching in between welcome visits from Shrek and Princess Fiona, Shug wanting to go outside, NFL games being on, and Gator Momma servin’ up some lobstah.  Yeah baby, we had lobstah.  Well, Mom and I enjoyed it.  Gator Dad says he doesn’t like to work for his food.  :)

So I had fun watching this year’s Emmy’s and wanted to share a few of my favorite moments with you.

First off…the fashion! 

Holy Hot Mess – Bad Kitty!

- Leighton Meister is a gorgeous girl. Can you see her underneath all that dress and makeup AND hair??  The dress is bad enough but then they put all that makeup on her and it was just toooooo much.  Simplify.

Nerds everywhere shrieked over the Princess Leia braid:

As opposed to her Gossip Girl costar who could use a little stitching to keep the dress held together.  I highly recommend Girlyfriend’s sewing skills.  When you got a plunging neckline, double sided tape and some needle and thread work wonders, trust.

***Sidebar – Gator Momma drew an erroneous conclusion that I was somehow physically ACCOSTED and my dress was torn at Dragon*Con when I encountered the Monk and the Pirate.  No, I just had a maxi dress with a low cut bust line on that I wore as a test run.  At the end of the day, even with double sided tape, it was agreed it needed to be sewn up.  I was even pretty modestly dressed compared to some of the girls in costume, but it was NOTHIN’ compared to Blake above.  Girl.  Wow.  J Lo just sat up and took notice.***

I don’t know who is trying to bring back the Marie Antoinette style Paniers but they need to be stopped, FAST:

My personal favorite of the evening:

Classic.  Elegant.  With a hint of fun because of the color and the beading.  As Captain Fabulous would say, "GORG!"

So now onto the really good stuff…the show itself.  Now personally, I cannot fathom that "True Blood" wasn’t nominated.  I mean come ON Emmy voters!!  Season 1 was amazing.  The writing alone needed to be recognized.  Ahem.  But anyway.

Everyone agreed that Neil Patrick Harris was a GENIUS choice for the host.  His opening act was hilarious.  His witty comments were made of win.  When he interviewed John Cryer (who will ALWAYS be Duckie to me!) who beat him in his own category I knew we were in for a treat. 

And then…le STACHE!

Ok Sarah Silverman, I forgive you the paniers above because the stache is made of WIN.  I have NO idea how you kept a straight face when they showed you as a nominee but I salute you!  The only thing even funnier would have been Matt Damon sitting next to you with his fake stache on from his new movie, "The Informant".

Annnnnnd then I scared Gator Mom and Gator Dad because I literally hopped up in down in my chair over this moment of WIN!


Dr. Horrible broke into the presentation!!  WIN WIN WIN!  Joss Whedon, I love you for letting them do this.  And yes, they did win the Emmy. 

So for those of you who need a frame of reference and have some free time on your hands and LOVE you some Joss Whedon (Gator Dad, this means YOU), here’s some awesome served with a side of radical for ya.  "Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog" in its entirety.  This was one of my favorite moments at Dragon*Con – their sing-a-long with the Sing-A-Long was genius.  Felicia Day’s guest appearance was just the icing on the cake of win.

Now watching:  "The Guild" – Another webisode featuring a Joss Whedon alum, Felicia Day, our "Dr. Horrible" heroine.  Its hilarious.  I don’t play World of Warcraft or any of those other online games but I know quite a few people who do so I found it particularly humorous.

Queen Latifah reminds us of our losses this past year. Sing it, girl!!! The older I get, the more poignant this montage gets every year…

Oh I am NOT a fan of Reese’s dress. It is NOT flattering in this light.

Best Director: DANNY BOYLE!! I actually started typing that on my blackberry before it was announced. He’s accepting as Tigger from Winnie The Pooh! I love him even more!!!!

Best Actress: ICONS on the stage. The crowd is on their feet. Sophia Loren has her hand on her hip like, “Yeah, I KNOW!”. Anne Hathaway’s lip trembles as Shirley Mcclaine praises her as an actress. Kate Winslet is so transcendent. Melissa Leo’s Hair is STRAIGHT OUT OF the 80′s. Hallie Berry is gracious to not point this out. Ms. Loren presents Meryl Streep. Is there any point mentioning the last nominee?? I mean seriously…she is gonna win. Hey look, Nicole Kidman is wearing ANOTHER dress that makes her look naked. Don’t get me wrong, the nude look works for her. Angelina Jolie looks gorgeous. I’d hate her but she’s too hot to hate. HOLY SHIT KATE WINSLET WON!!!!! Yey!!!!! I love her! Never saw the movie but LOVE her! (There is some British BITCH who deserves to be called a worse word but I AM a lady and she IS NOT – who hates on Kate every time she accepts an award. Shut the hell up you jealous hag.) Kate is gracious and funny and kind. She acknowledges all her fellow nominees. They all worship at the altar of Meryl.

Best Actor: Wow. Michael Douglas presents Frank Langella as Richard Nixon. DeNiro steals the show w/ making the witty comment of the category about Sean playing the gay guy Harvey Milk. Great nomination speech. Adrian Brody (who looks like a homeless guy in a tux!) Presents the dead Dad from Six Feet Under Richard Jenkins. Hannibal Lechter Anthony Hopkins presents Brad Pitt as Benjamin Button (who will not win because he is STILL too pretty…get some gray in your hair like Clooney did). Sir Ben Kingsley presents Mickey Rourke. Sean Penn wins. Brace yourselves for the cause speech. Even I…little miss lefty leaning liberal…know this. OH HELL this is too good not to directly quote: “You Commie Homo loving Sons O’ Guns. I did not expect this but I …and…I want it to be very clear that I do know how hard I make it to appreciate me, often.”. HA!!!! Self awareness is a good first step. Ok damnit…I do agree w/ him sometimes…even if he is a self righteous prick who gets on my nerves (and for the record I HATED MYSTIC RIVER). I do believe in equal rights for everyone.

Best Picture: SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE WINS!!!! Jai Ho!!!! This is truly an amazing film and I am SO glad it won. Where are the little kids!? There they are!

Oh this is interesting…they are giving sneak peeks of 2009 films. That’s a first.

Well that was ironic to end on a clip of the Guinea Pig movie when you’re testing out a new format and showing new movies for this coming year and its a GUINEA PIG! Oh you crazy Academy Awards ironic editors and producers. :::facepalm:::

Best Supporting Actor: I love the new format w/ 5 former winners presenting. Seriously LOVE it. Cuba Gooding Jr.’s presentation of Robert Downey Jr. still has me giggling. Paraphrasing: “A White Actor playing a white Australian playing a black man in black face…man, are you out of your MIND!?!? Brothers need ta work!! Good luck in SHAFT.”

Kevin Kline presents Heath Ledger as the nominee for THE DARK KNIGHT. He better win! YEYYYYY!!! He does!!! His family accepts in his memory. Everyone has such compassion on their faces. Anne Hathaway, Kate Winslet, and Angelina Jolie have tears in their eyes.

Documentary Montage: Brutal truths are revealed. True life far surpasses fiction. Bill Maher is presenting Documentary Feature?? I predict MAN ON WIRE…and it wins!!! Dude just balanced the Oscar on his CHIN!

Documentary Short: Smile Pinky wins. Fast Forwarding…

TIME OUT: Jimmy Kimmel’s commercial w/ Tom Cruise? Priceless. Tom Cruise is slowly coming back from crazy land.

Art Direction: I like the format of this and pretty much would like anything w/ SJP presenting it (even if she is wearing the grown up version of Miley Cyrus’ dress – hey! Is there a theme here? Jen Anniston channel’s Amanda Bynes and now this?).

Benjamin Button wins. Boring acceptance speech. Thank you blahs. Yada yada.

Daniel Craig keeps flubbing his lines. Heee.

Costume Design: HOW was The Sex and the City movie NOT nominated for this?? Oh shocker. The Merchant Ivory-esque period piece movie THE DUCHESS won.

Hey look! Jennifer Anniston is playing the grown up version of Amanda Bynes from last year! They even have the same french braid action going on.

Amanda Bynes will be pleased to know she looks HOT in her 40′s.

Best Animated Feature comes w/ an obnoxious techno montage but WALL-E wins!!! YEY! I loved that movie. Its such a wonderful movie!!!!

I loved Brad Bird’s shout out to his high school drama teacher.

And Jen Anniston is seriously freaking me out w/ how much she looks JUST like Amanda Bynes from LAST year. Or was it even the year before?? No, last year?

Animated film goes to a Japanese guy for a french sounding animated film. He says thank you a LOT and then says “Domo arigato Mr. Roboto.” Which elicits a full on burst of laughter from me.

Ok, did anyone else find the amount of drunk people at last nights Golden Globes to be more than usual?  I mean my GAWD, Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lang were practically holding each other up.  Lord knows Dru had enough hairspray in that helmet of hers that if she’d fallen and hit her head (a topic I am well versed on) she would have been cushioned.  Alex P. Cheatin’ and I were texting during the awards, while I watched from home after book club with Dark Diva and Walkin’ Girl.  Alex P. Cheatin’ is strongly encouraging me to get tipsy and LIVE blog the Oscars.  I am very tempted.

Random observations:
1)  I wanted to marry Beyonce’s necklace.
2)  Christina Applegate’s necklace could have been my illicit affair.
3)  Rene Zellweger just lost YEARS of good fashion karma points with that monstrosity she had on last night.  Cut out shoulders?  Really?
4)  Was it just us, or was Zack Efron totally staring down Hayden Pennetiere’s cleavage the entire time they were presenting together?
5)  Anna Paquin did manage to tick me off by thanking her makeup artist and not acknowledging Charlaine Harris or her boyfriend, Stephen Moyer.  For SHAME girl.  For shame.  Then Dark Diva, Walkin’ Girl and I had a frank conversation where we all basically admitted we didn’t think she was going to win anyway (seriously, no one even considered it a possibility – it was the whole, "Its and honor just to be nominated…" situation) so her speech clearly was of the, "Uhh, I wasn’t supposed to win this.  But I showed y’all my boobies and yes, they’re real!  Thanks for the award Hollywood Foreign Press!"
6)  YOU GO KATE WINSLET!  I haven’t seen either movie and they both look like the types that I would see once, say…"That was an amazing story that I will NEVER watch again." and then be depressed for 24 hours.  
7)  Anne Hathaway not winning was a downer because her acceptance speech at the Critics Choice Awards when she tied Meryl Streep was just so charmingly humble and awestruck.  She praised Meryl more than anything else in the speech and then thanked her Dad for showing her what its like to be cared for by a real man.  OH snap imprisoned ex Italian playboy embezzler boyfriend.  You just got SERVED.  And Hollywood LOVES a comeback story.  :::standing ovation:::
8)  J Lo telling everyone to hush because, "Mama’s talkin!"  :::swoon:::  Dark Diva pointed out she was NOT wearing that wedding ring AGAIN.
9)  Johnny Depp was BOMBED.  Seriously.  I was waiting for him to just read the winner a-la Elizabeth Taylor and her "GLADIATOR!" moment.

Book Club for the Atlanta Charlatans kicked off last night with a bang.  It was quite fun and we actually didn’t talk about the book.  Everyone was just getting to know one another, enjoying food…drinking wine…we totally lost track of time.  So we are just recycling the book for NEXT month.  LOL 

Mr. ECU and Auburn Sis have had MORE drama with their move, y’all.  Its harrrible.  I say this with all sincerity, its Auburn Sis’ story to tell but holy hades they have been through the RINGER these past few days.  They are finally on their way to Atlanta with the last of their things this evening and all I have to say is WELCOME HOME…you are not allowed to move out of state EVER again.  

So thats all I’ve got today.  I’m verrrrry tired and in need of some sleep.  Today was a long one so I need to get my zzz’s.

:::News Flash – ABC Family is currently showing "A Year Without A Santa Claus".  Keeping with our tradition…drink every time:  Rudolph’s nose lights up, someone makes a racist, sexist, or bigoted comment, or if any ethnic group is stereotyped.  The Miser Brothers are in this one!  Yeys!!:::

So the Golden Globe Nominations came out today.  The full list of nominees is varied and totally random in some cases.  Everyone thought "The Dark Knight" was going to end up with a ton of nominations.  Hell, I was just hoping for a nomination for Christian Bale since he’s been in my top 5 since I was 19 years old.    :::ticks them off  on her fingers:::  Well, he’s in good company!  And eek, I think they are all British?  (Matthew Goode, Colin Firth, Christian Bale, some dude, some other dude…)  Anyway, the only nomination for "The Dark Knight" was for Heath Ledger for Best Supporting Actor.  That seriously sucks.  Not that he got a nomination, but that the rest of the production didn’t get recognized.  That was an awesome movie.  Another big shocker?  Kate Winslet was nominated TWICE.  John Wilkinson too.  And someone from "Pineapple Express" was nominated?  Seriously?  But the big news, for me at least? 

TRUE BLOOD WAS NOMINATED FOR BEST DRAMA 
AND BEST ACTRESS IN A DRAMA!!!

Congratulations to Alan Ball and Anna Paquin.  Well deserved.  Now, don’t get me wrong – I think that Nelsan Ellis (Lafayette) deserved a nod, but I’m happy that the show itself was nominated.  Hell, the lady that played Gran was freakin’ awesome too.  And Tara had her moments.  But "Entourage" got two nominations?  Lets nominate Jeremy Piven AGAIN.  Another person I was rooting for was Anne Hathaway because I think she’s brilliantly talented, gorgeous, and starred in one of my favorite movie duos, "The Princess Diaries" and "The Princess Diaries 2:  Royal Engagement".  What?  I just told you I watched "Sisterhood of The Traveling Pants 2" last night and you’re surprised I like "The Princess Diaries"?  Its Gary Marshall, people!  Half the movie I spend spotting the FOGs (thats Friends Of Gary) who appear in all his movies.  The list grows as the years pass, but the core group remains.
